Watch the Big Billy Bend online guitar lesson by Jeff McErlain from Play in the Style of Billy Gibbons
The overbend is one of my favorite techniques to use when playing. I first became aware of the overbend in Jimmy Page's classic solo on "Whole Lotta Love". It is a favorite maneuver of Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix and Peter Green as well. I know these players all influenced Billy Gibbons playing I have heard him discuss them in a number of interviews. If you were not familiar with Peter Green, I highly suggest you do so immediately. Peter Green is the founding member of Fleetwood Mac. In fact, that used to be called Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac blues band when they debuted in the mid 60's. They were at the vanguard of British blues, and Peter Green is one of the best blues guitar players I can think of to this day. His life is somewhat tragic due to drug induced schizophrenia, and his playing now is a shadow of its former self. At the time, Fleetwood Mac was a huge band. I would recommend a greatest hits compilation of that to start getting in to the genius of Peter Green. I recently just heard an interview with Billy Gibbons where he discusses his love of Peter Green's guitar playing and the influence it had on his playing in detail.
