Watch the Prickly Pillow online guitar lesson by Jeff McErlain from Play in the Style of Billy Gibbons

Prickly Pillow' is an excellent exercise in hybrid picking in itself. I have also heard Jeff Beck use this lick quite a bit, and as a result I use it all the time! As with any new technique that you are trying to work up, take your time with that and use a metronome. The metronome is exceptionally important, as it keeps us honest and is an excellent way to keep track of your progress when working on a lick. For example, the first day you may have it at 70 bpm and by day three you may be up to 90 bpm. The only sure-fire way to know this is by using the metronome obviously. I know, the metronome is a pain in the butt sometimes and I agree wholeheartedly. But once you get used to it the benefits are immeasurable and at this point I cannot imagine practicing without one. For fun and some variation I highly recommend a good drum machine or drum program. An excellent program to get you started is called EZDrummer. I am not endorsed by the company or anything like that, just passing along some practical user information!
