Watch the La Solo online guitar lesson by Jeff McErlain from Play in the Style of Billy Gibbons

Let's talk about single coil pickups. As with most pickups for me, I like the medium to lower output ones. Those are the ones you find in classic and vintage instruments. The general thinking that I subscribe to, is the lower the output provides a greater tonal range. What I mean by this is when you have a very high output pickup which is usually designed to help distort your amplifier, you end up hearing the pickup more so than the combination of guitar and amp. I also, like Billy and other classic players, rely on the volume and tone knobs along with my fingers to coax tones out of the guitar. I find high output pickups interfere with this so that's no bueno in my book. If you are not happy with your guitar sound a pickup change can be a great tonal upgrade. But remember, if the guitar itself is a dog, a pickup change will not save the day!
