Watch the Feeling The Pinch online guitar lesson by Jeff McErlain from Play in the Style of Billy Gibbons

The pinch is the technique that Billy Gibbons is most synonymous with and here I show you basically what he is playing at the end of "La Grange" from the Tres Hombres record. The pinch harmonic is a somewhat elusive technique that takes some time to master. At first we may get some dead notes or miss it entirely, but stick with it. The real trick is choking up on the pick and catching some of the fleshy part of your thumb. A key element is only using down strokes to strike the note. Another trick to getting the note to squeal properly is to move the pick along different points of the string. By doing this we change where the harmonic is and we will eventually find that magic spot or spots to get the harmonics to pop out. As we can see in this example, that is exactly what we are doing. We are moving the pick along the string to produce a number of different harmonics to create that signature sound.
