Watch the Swing It Blue 1 online guitar lesson by David Blacker from West Coast Blues
Much of this course centers on the idea that solid West Coast Blues players spend time learning different stylistic approaches to playing the blues in order to develop the rich harmonic vocabulary and a deft sense of phrasing inherent in the style. Perhaps surprisingly, developing your own voice and signature style is also born out this process. While a lot of the individual pieces within this course stay true to a single approach or idea throughout the entire piece, "Swing It Blue" explores mixing various approaches within its three-chorus solo. Solo one features a classic Herb Ellis-style jazz-blues approach, while the second solo goes straight to the heart of the T-Bone Walker sound. Solo three wraps things up with Hollywood Fats-approved jump-blues licks. Switching between complementary styles within a solo can really grab the listener's attention while moving the tune forward in an interesting and musical way.
