Watch the The Hollywood Shuffle online guitar lesson by David Blacker from Swing Blues Survival Guide: Rhythm

If you're into the jump side of swing blues, then you definitely want to spend some time listening to Hollywood Fats. I highly recommend his two album set called The Hollywood Fats Band, containing more than enough raw material to form the basis of your jump blues approach to rhythm.

In this study, we're going to look at Fats' rhythmic approach to a shuffle in E, based off the tune "Red Headed Woman." We'll look at things like the interplay between rhythm and lead elements, walking bass lines, and some characteristic Fats voicings.
