Watch the Breakdown 5 online guitar lesson by Andy Aledort from Slow Blues Power

One of the signature elements of the “Stormy Monday” chord progression is the presence of iv7 (four minor seven) in bar 10. Though many blues guitar players do not reference Cm7 directly when soloing on this progression, it is an option, one that I took advantage of in this solo: at the end of beat two, I play the notes D and Eb, the second and minor third of C, into the notes G and Bb, the fifth and b7 (“flatted seventh”) of C, making direct and clear reference to Cm7. For balance, however, I move right back into G minor pentatonic and the G Blues scale for the remainder of the solo, which bring the listener back to “familiar ground,” musically speaking.
