In bar 6, I move back into the same slow, melodic bends that characterize Albert’s style, so listen very carefully for all of the subtle differences; if you deliver these phrases correctly, you will achieve the vocal-like, micro-tonal quality that Albert, and his disciple Stevie Ray Vaughan, mastered. The genius in Albert’s style is that it seems like what he is doing is very simple, when in fact it is quite difficult to recreate accurately.
Bar nine moves to the V (five) chord, D7, and here I like to play a lick that sounds a little like it’s based on two different scales, either D Mixolydian (D E F# G A B C) or A minor pentatonic with the sixth replacing the “flatted seventh” (A C D E F#). I prefer to think of it as D Mixolydian as it is played over a D7 chord. This is a great sound, one also often incorporated by Jimi Hendrix.
