Of all of the many altered tunings employed over the years by blues and rock guitarists, one of the most common, and easily achievable, is drop D: simply tune the low E string down one whole step to D, resulting in, low to high: D A D G B E. This is an especially great tuning to use for low-down dirty blues, as illustrated in the accompanying examples.
