Watch the Lick Vocabulary 5 online guitar lesson by Andy Aledort from Progressive Blues Power

This lick vocabulary offers essentially the same approach as that shown in Lick Vocabulary 1, but is moved up one octave with the index finger used to fret notes located at the 12th fret. Playing these scales in this position is the most prevalent approach for soloing in the blues and blues/rock idiom, and there are countless stock licks that can be derived from soloing in this position. For example, I begin with riffs that are played by barring the index finger across the top two strings at the 12th fret while bending the G string with the ring finger. When expanding from E minor pentatonic to E blues scale ideas, the use of the Bb (Bb) broadens the musical and melodic scope while allowing greater range for invention.
