This solo begins with a full-bar pick-up, based primarily on the E blues scale in first or open position and devised of a combination of 16th and 8th notes. One of the signature elements in this solo is the use of the same pitches sounded both as fretted notes and as open strings; this is true primarily for the high E and B strings. In bars 6 and 7 of the example (bars 5 and 6 of the 12-bar progression), I slide into A7 two-note voicings from one fret below, as Stevie does on this track as well as many others.
