Watch the Dusty Roads online guitar lesson by David Blacker from Lone Wolf Blues
Dusty Roads is a simple Travis picking piece in the key of A major. The main idea with this piece is to get a hold of what's happening over the IV and V chords. These are some great "out of the box" fingerings that can add some nice counterpoint to a simple blues progression.
Over both the IV and V chords these fingerings take advantage of the melody and bass notes available when you move up the neck and out of open position. I wanted to include these so people would feel encouraged to find new shapes further up the neck to be used as chord substitutions. Whenever you move out of the open position it presents new challenges and opportunities.
Take note of the movement between the root and dominant 7th notes in each chord change. This movement creates the melody for the piece.
