Watch the Chord To Chord online guitar lesson by Matthieu Brandt from Jump Blues

We can make moving from one chord to the other a little more interesting by using different shapes and types of chords.
What we're doing in these progressions is creating a bit of tension, right before we're changing to another chord. This tension is then released once we land on the next chord.
Often some very jazzy type chord forms are used to spice these progressions up. They mostly don't sound any longer than one bar, sometimes even only one beat.
These chords are borrowed from different scales. If you want to try to solo off the top of these scales, be prepared to invest some major time. You would end up playing a more bebop, jazz type of music.
