Watch the Gloomy Tuesday: Rhythm 1 online guitar lesson by Andy Aledort from Jam Night Vol. 3

Just as T-Bone likes to do, I focus on 9th chord voicings that do not include the root notes: the first chord, G9, is voiced using the notes B, F, A and D--the major third, flatted seventh, ninth and fifth. I use a similar approach for the four and five chords, C9 and D9 respectively, by often leaving out the low root notes that are usually played on the fifth string. For the series of chords that set up the move to the five chord, D9--there chords are G7, Am7, Bm7, Bbm7--I play voicings that fall on the top four strings only in order to leave "space" and yield a clearer sound overall.
