Watch the Difficult To Grasp: Lead 1 online guitar lesson by Andy Aledort from Jam Night Vol. 3
The very first riff in this solo combines Bb minor pentatonic (Bb Db Eb F Ab) with Bb major pentatonic (Bb C D F G) via the use of the open G string--the sixth of Bb--and the open D string--the major third of Bb. It sounds cool to place the major and minor thirds, D and Db respectively, right next to each other. One fo the things i like about the Bb minor pentatonic scale in this position is the way one can alternate between the pinkie and index finger on the G and D strings with relative ease. At the five chord, F, I slide up to Bb minor pentatonic in sixth position, and at the turnaround--Ab-Eb-Bb--I move all the way up to 14th position to wrap up the solo.
