Watch the Join Up: Rhythm 2 online guitar lesson by Andy Aledort from Jam Night Vol. 3
This rhythm part presents a few different repeated motifs that contain both rhythmic and melodic function: theD5 power chord is played in eighth notes with a staccatto attack utilizing hybrid picking, with fingerpicking used to accentuate the higher strings; this is followed by a blues-type two-note shape built from the minor third, F, and the fifth above, A, bent slightly and vibratoed, followed by a descending single-note riff based on D minor pentatonic. The toggle switch is set to the "number two" position on a Strat, between the bridge and middle so both pickups sound simultaneously, creating a different texture. The verse rhythm is much more syncopated that the first rhythm guitar pass, as 16th-note based fingerpicking is used between the G and B strings, yielding a country/blues type sound. Sliding doublestops thirds apart are sounded over the open A pedal tone, and then the consistent two-note approach is switched to sliding sixths over the G chord.
