Watch the Join Up: Rhythm 1 online guitar lesson by Andy Aledort from Jam Night Vol. 3
In this example, a repeated opening "lick" over D7 gives way to a I-V-IV (one-five-four) chord progression, followed by VI-V-IV-V (six-five-four-five) progression, which sets up the return to the D7 "lick." The approach taken to the structure here is intentionally basic, laying down a solid beat meant to lock in tightly with the bass and drums. For the initial part of the "verse," root/fifth-root/sixth chords alternate in a Chuck Berry-like style.
