Watch the Ridin' That Train: Lead 1 online guitar lesson by Andy Aledort from Jam Night Vol. 3

Garcia evokes the pedal steel approach on his "Casey Jones" solo, via the use of oblique bends and chromaticism. My aim was to bring these elements into this solo, so after the initial C root notes is played, I fret D two frets higher and then bend the string up one half step to Eb and then a whole step to E. Over F, I initially walk down from C to B to Bb, followed by a bend of G up to A. This is where the use of oblique bends fist appears, as i hold the bend on the G string while fretting a high C on the B string. The resolution of the solo line the first time through is done using a descending phrase, and in contrast I use an ascending phrase at the end of the second phrase.
