Watch the Join Up: Lead 2 online guitar lesson by Andy Aledort from Jam Night Vol. 3

The second solo is intended to function as a continuous progression from the first solo, so after the initial melodic lines played over the D pedal--focusing on melodic shapes bvery much in the style of Albert King and Jimi Hendrix--I move to a vocal-like melody an octave higher than the first pass when the verse drops in. As in the first solo, all of the riffs "describe" each chord in the progression, which serves to create a cohesive sound between the soloing guitar and the backing track.
