Watch the Difficult To Grasp: Rhythm 2 online guitar lesson by Andy Aledort from Jam Night Vol. 3

One of the most fun things about devising rhythm parts in soul and R&B is that all of the great blues/rock guitar players--Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Johnny Winter, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page, among others--studied the many licks guitarists like Steve Cropper laid down on classic tracks like "Hard to Handle" and brought those techniques to new and different heights within a rock context. Today, we can pull from both realms as we please in devising rhythm parts of our own. In this second rhythm guitar pass, I stick with three-note voicings on the top strings, very much in the way that Duane Allman added guitar parts to many of the songs cut during the Layla sessions. At the repeated turnaound that closes the pattern, smaller and higher chord voicings are used in compliment to the lower voicings of the first rhyhtm guitar part.
