Watch the Paging Joseph: Lead 1 online guitar lesson by Andy Aledort from Jam Night Vol. 2
This E minor pentatonic-based solo is performed almost entirely in 12th position, which is the approach used by Jimi Hendrix for his solo on the studio version of "Hey Joe." I begin with a whole-step bend from D to E on the B string and add vibrato, followed by a descending lick played in straight 16th notes followed by 16th-note triplets; the beginning melodic phrase is then repeated, followed by a line that resolves the idea while shifting to bluesier territory. A straight-16ths approach is used once more for the second time through the progression, and note the use of the stray open D string, a technique used by Jimi in his solo.
