Watch the Sweet Windy City: Rhythm 2 online guitar lesson by Andy Aledort from Jam Night Vol. 2
This figure begins with an E7 voicing played in fourth position on the top three strings, and I start out with a down-up-up triplet-based strumming pattern; I utilize upstrokes more in order to accentuate the sound of the top two strings. Over A, I simply slide this shape down one fret, which yields an Bbdim7 (or A7b9) type of sound. Sliding sixths ascend the fretboard as a means to connect the one chord, E, to the four chord, A in bar 4 into bar 5, after which I stick with sliding sixths intended as a melodic device, culminating in bar 8 with a single-note solo-type lick based on E Mixolydian (E F# G# A B C# D). I then arpeggiate the B7 in a manner similar to the first example, but move back into single-note solo lines in bar 10, based primarily on the E blues scale (E G A Bb B D). The figure wraps with a half-step slide up the E7 to kick off the next 12-bar section.
