Watch the Interstate Blues: Lead 1 online guitar lesson by Andy Aledort from Jam Night Vol. 2

Two modern masters of the blues shuffle within the genre of blues/rock are Eric Clapton and Johnny Winter, and the influence of both of these monster guitarists is in evidence in this solo example. I begin the solo with lines similar to those played by Eric Clapton on the Derek & the Dominos version of the track, focusing on A minor pentatonic (A C D E G) and utilizing a rhythm of steady eighth note triplets (or steady eighth notes, if one is thinking of this as being written in a 12/8 time signature). In true Clapton style, minor pentatonic phrases are balanced against phrases based on A major pentatonic (A B C# E F#); alternating between these two essential scales is a standard soloing technique within the blues genre, as heard in the playing of BB King, T-Bone Walker, Jimi Hendrix, Buddy Guy and many, many others.
