Watch the Heavy Load: Lead 1 online guitar lesson by Andy Aledort from Jam Night Vol. 1
I begin this solo in bars 1 and 2 with lines based on G major pentatonic (G A B D E) played in second position and utilizing open strings. In bar 3, I switch to targeting the specific chord tones of G, Bm and C, and in bar 4 revert to G major pentatonic, bringing the country oblique bending technique into the picture via the combination of a bent note on the B string combined with a normally fretted note on the high E string. For bars 5-8 of the verse, I play lines based on the G major scale (G A B C D E F#) which offers more melodic flexibility. Over the chorus, I use sliding thirds in the first section and sliding sixths in the second section, with attention to melodic content as well as adherence to the chord progression.
