Watch the Rough Shape: Rhythm 2 online guitar lesson by Andy Aledort from Jam Night Vol. 1

As the verse section of this tune sits on the one chord, G7, I embellish the G7 chord by moving up the fretboard from one G7 voicing to another, starting in third position and then after a brief stop at C/G by barring at the fifth fret, sound a higher G7 voicing in fifth position. Moving a two-note shape up and down the neck in this way is very keyboard-like, and is reminiscent of the melody of the R&B/soul classic, "Back at the Chicken Shack." For D7, I begin with a first inversion D7 (the third of the chord, F#, is positioned as the lowest note, known as third in the bass or first inversion) and then move up to 10th position for a standard D major triad embellished with a single-note melody.
