In bars 1 and 3, the low D root note is sounded on beat one, followed by syncopated strumming on a funkified D9 chord voicing. Like the first example, this rhythm part emulates a typical horn section idea, which is a great approach to apply when devising a soul/R&B rhythm guitar part. The idea is then transposed up to the four chord, G9, and I add single-note lines based on D major pentatonic (D E F# A B). The closing arpeggiated riff is based on the notes of a D13 chord: F# A C E G.
