Watch the SECTION 2: Picking Workouts online guitar lesson by John Hatcher from Fingerstyle Blues Roots
In Section 2, we'll cover 4 levels of picking exercises designed to help you develop the control and finger independence that you need to play great acoustic blues.
When I was first approaching fingerstyle blues, alternating basslines over a moving melody gave me trouble. Playing bass with one rhythm while your fingers pluck out a separate rhythm for the melody is a bit of a mindbender.
Practicing these 4 picking workouts in Section 2 will help isolate and develop the movements you need in order to play more complicated fingerstyle tunes with confidence.
We'll start out with an exercise designed to get you playing the melody in between the beat. Then, we'll turn up the intensity a bit and have you playing melody notes both on and off the beats. The third picking workout introduces a 3 note pattern for the bass picking. Finally, we'll really kick it into high gear with an exercise that plucks out a melody over a chord change while introducing a 3 string alternating bass picking technique.
