Watch the Mississippi Stop Time online guitar lesson by David Hamburger from Fingerstyle Blues Factory

There was one summer in high school when I listened to Stefan Grossman and John Renbourn’s Under the Volcano LP every morning before leaving for work. Around that time, Grossman had a column in Guitar Player in which he presented several of the tunes on that record, and a couple of those tunes had a big impact on my ideas about coming up with instrumental guitar music. It didn’t occur to me until much later to try and transcribe any of their music myself, so it was some time before I learned a version of “Mississippi Blues #3,” their instrumental take on the William Brown tune. Do yourself a favor, and do a quick search on Youtube for Brown’s 1942 field recording “Mississippi Blues” - it’s like nothing else in the country blues cannon. This lick is adapted from a turnaround move I soaked up from Grossman’s arrangement.
