Watch the 3rd in the Bass online guitar lesson by David Hamburger from Fingerstyle Blues Factory
When I was first learning to fingerpick, I couldn’t always find records of the people I knew were important, but I did get my hands on library copy of Richard Saslow’s book The Art of Ragtime Guitar. Long considered a cult classic, the book is now back in print, and I can’t recommend it highly enough. I learned the last tune first - three choruses of the blues in A, and I’m sure that’s the first place I encountered the D7/F# chord that figures so heavily in so much blues guitar playing. The rest of the tunes are Saslow’s original ragtime tunes, which manage to be both accessible and intriguing. I learned them all, and I’m sure they had a permanent effect on my own playing, even though I haven’t played them in decades.
