Watch the Son House, Somewhat online guitar lesson by David Hamburger from Fingerstyle Blues Factory

Like John Hurt and Skip James, Eddie James “Son” House, Jr. lived long enough to be rediscovered in the 1960s and brought onto the folk circuit, performing and recording for ten years before retiring from music for a second time in 1974. I’ve adapted one of his classic descending turnarounds, which he generally played in open tuning, to the key of A. What we’ve actually got in the first measure is the same thing as the first measure of Bobby Green, but down an octave. Then in measure two, we walk back up the low string, placing E blues licks over the ascending bass line, which is, I grant you, rather more uptown than anything Son House was into, but hey.
