Watch the Diminished online guitar lesson by David Hamburger from Fingerstyle Blues Factory

There’s a whole family of diminished chord turnarounds. This one breaks things up by arpeggiating the chords themselves, and varies things further by using the open high string on the second beat of measure 2 rather than playing the third fret on the high string, which would keep all the voicings consistent. Cool bonus feature: you could look at the last voicing, in the second half of measure 2, as an Amin6 chord, which was a common swing-era way to return to the I chord used by Charlie Christian, among others. Oh, and the Beatles were partial to minor iv chords in a major progression, but that’s a whole other discussion.
