Watch the Targeting Chord Tones online guitar lesson by Jason Loughlin from Blues Connections: Major
Remember all that work we did saying scale degree numbers as we shedded our scales? Here's what we're going to do with it.
We'll be targeting the root, 3rd, and 5th of a chord as we play over it. These are points of resolve. Everything else in the scale (2nd, b3rd, 6th, b7th) are points of tension. A great solo is made by balancing tension and resolve. We need to be able to see these chord tones within each pentatonic position.
