Watch the Straight Rock Blues 1 online guitar lesson by Jeff McErlain from Blues Survival Guide: Rhythm Edition

A great primer for this tune is of course "Honky Tonk Woman" by the stones. The essential Stones records for me using this kind of sound are "Exile on Main St", "Sticky Fingers", and "Beggars Banquet". I mention these records specifically due to the sound we are using on this track, of course the Stones have many more amazing records. The reach of this open G approach can be heard on many hits by the Black Crows, Sheryl Crow, The White Stripes, and Black Keys. The real fun here is how relatively simple it is to jump right into the sound with the three simple voicings. For years I didn't know that Richards was in open tuning, I could never make the tunes sound quite right. I'd look at his hands and have no clue what he was doing. Once I learned it was open G the mystery was solved.
