Watch the Straight Rock Blues online guitar lesson by Jeff McErlain from Blues Survival Guide: Rhythm Edition
The straight rock feel is essential to a night of blues for me. Switching the feel away from a swing eight note feel to a straight eighth note feel can be a bit tricky but very effective. This study definitely borrows heavily from one of my favorite bands The Rolling Stones. To stay true to Keith Richards approach I am in open G which really enhances the sound that we identify with the Stones. The strings are tuned to an open G chord from low to high D G D G B D. As we will see I am only drawing from a few simple chord voicings that are in pretty much every Stones tune I can think of!
