Watch the Dynamics online guitar lesson by Jeff McErlain from Blues Survival Guide: Rhythm Edition
Music is what feelings sound like. I wish I had said that. Imagine a conversation without the natural cadences and pitch changes in our voices, it would be bizarre. We want to strive for the same thing in music and blues is the perfect setting for it. I actively practice dynamics all the time, because like everything in life, you need to practice it to get better! It is one of the single most important elements of good music and to use a cliche, it separates the men from the boys. It is one of the elements I look for in any player. The good news is that often times being made aware of dynamics makes you a better player right away. A perfect example of this and one of the greatest pieces of recorded music is Blind Willie Johnson's "Dark Was The Night, Cold Was The Ground" with no lyrics just a guitar and voice his use of dynamics tells a story that words could not.
