Watch the Classic Shuffle 1 online guitar lesson by Jeff McErlain from Blues Survival Guide: Rhythm Edition
I have supplied some pretty nice background tracks with this course recorded live in the studio. Please listen carefully to the drummer first. Always ask yourself these questions: "What is bass drum pattern? What beats is he playing on? What is the snare drum pattern? What is the high hat pattern?" Try to isolate each part of the kit and learn the beat in your head. A basic shuffle pattern will have the bass drum on beats 1 and 3 and the snare on 2 and 4 with a triplet feel. Boom -crack, boom -crack. A great exercise it to tap your foot on beats 1 and 3 and clap on beats 2 and 4. This really helps get the accents in our minds. We NEVER clap on 1 and 3 in a blues, that may be the squarest this in the world. There is an old saying "Friends never let friends clap on 1 and 3".
