Watch the Call and Response Blues online guitar lesson by Jeff McErlain from Blues Guitar Survival Guide - Lead

Here is a classic call and response blues. Here we are learning how to listen to the band and where we are in the framework of the blues down to the measure. It's so easy to just turn on the solo switch and go for it, all the while ignoring the band, I know I did this for years and that's maybe I get calls for more gigs now then I did then! We are playing rhythm guitar for each for the first two bars of each four bar phrase, this is where a singer would sing in a traditional blues. This is often called the call. On the second half of the four bar phrase we are playing our musical response. If we listen to most blues tunes we hear this clearly, think of Red House by Hendrix, this is exactly what he does. It is a required skill!
