Watch the Rumba Blues online guitar lesson by Jeff McErlain from Blues Guitar Survival Guide - Lead

I am a big fan of mixing the major and minor blues scales as opposed to sticking to the minor blues scale for many reasons. I really love the brighter or sweeter sound it produces. The King of this is BB King of course, I know it sounds silly but I didn't really get into his playing until I was older and man was I missing out! His influence can be heard everywhere especially in two of my favorite players Eric Clapton and Peter Green. I highly suggest BB King's Complete Collection on iTunes as a great overview of the master's work. Each one of his solos is a masterclass on playing the blues. You will notice that his sound is much sweeter or happier than say Albert King (another favorite) or SRV. This is because his use of mixing the major and minor blues scales and by doing this he is outlining the sound of the chord changes. Often overlooked by guitar players is how some of these classic blues men are also some of the greatest blues singers as well, funny how easily we can take that for granted when focusing on the guitar so much.
