Watch the Sonic Choices online guitar lesson by Jeff McErlain from Blues Guitar Survival Guide - Lead

One of the aspects of the guitar that make it so difficult to learn sometimes is that these are a number of ways to play the same pitch. For example we have 5 ways we can play the same note E. This is what makes reading so difficult on the guitar. On piano, there is only one if those E notes in that register. The up shot is we have 5 different ways to play an E that all sound different! How cool is that? Each string and fret has a different timbre to the string. The thicker strings are fuller, warmer and have more overtones, the thinner strings, the opposite. These are amazing tonal options to take into consideration. Another added benefit is a lick in one position may be very difficult to play yet very easy in another. I am not going to lie, this adds to the work load, but once your ears are open to the sounds you won't want to go back.
