Watch the Southern Rock Vamp online guitar lesson by Jeff McErlain from Blues Guitar Survival Guide - Lead

In this Southern Rock Vamp I am incorporating two essential scales we covered. The Major pentatonic scale and the dominant pentatonic scale. These scales both fit perfectly in the progression and both sound a little different. The scale formula for major blues is R, 2, b3, 3, 5 6. The dominant pentatonic scale is R, 3, 4, 5, b7. We can see there is a lot of cross over between the two scales but the main difrrence that we hear it the b7. This gives that particularly bluesy sound that the sweeter major blues scale is missing. It sounds great to switch between the two as I have done in the example. The parent scale at work here is called mixolydian. If you are not familiar with the modes don't get scared, you are already playing with them when you mix these two scales.
