Watch the Chord Tones online guitar lesson by Jeff McErlain from Blues Guitar Survival Guide - Lead

Chord tones are simply the notes that make up a chord. It is essential that we begin to memorize the notes in each chord and where they are on the neck. The end goal on this is to be able to pick and choose those notes at the right time to outline the sound of a chord. The best sounding notes on any chord will be the notes that are in the chord, makes sense doesn't it? But for some reason that simple concept took many years to sink in and find its way into my playing. This was mainly due to laziness. I was honest with myself, I play guitar and I don't know what notes are in which chord. That is like knowing how to speak and not knowing how to spell or write. This also carries over to knowing the notes on the neck, it is essential. So believe me, once I put in the time and it gets easier as you move forward the payoff is exponential.
