Watch the Between Bends online guitar lesson by Jeff McErlain from Blues Guitar Survival Guide - Lead
This is one of my favorite topics and requires a fair amount of practice and required listening. We have looked at half step, whole step, minor, and major 3rd bends. What we have not looked at is the notes in between. These are quarter and eighth step bends and anything in between those. These are the real magical bends that help evoke real emotion and add a haunting and crying element similar to the human voice. If we listen to any great blues singer we hear these inflections all the time Muddy Waters being a prime example. I listen to singers for this but all the classic guitarists use them, Albert King and Albert Collins come right to mind. I know I am repeating myself but these bends must be practiced carefully, as it is as much hand strength as it is developing our ears.
