Hop Wilson was one of the few bluesmen to hold forth on the lap steel, an electrified lap-style instrument used in country
music and western swing until the pedal steel took over in the mid-1950s. The lap steel is usually played with a bullet bar,
a solid piece of steel held to the strings with an overhand grip, and fingerpicks on the right hand. Steel players tend to
avoid playing in open position, making them a good source for closed-position licks.
