Watch the Muddy Solo 1 online guitar lesson by David Hamburger from Slide Shop
While Muddy Waters' band came to epitomize the forceful electrified postwar Chicago sound, his earliest Chess recordings were stripped down affairs featuring just Muddy's electric slide and vocals, upright bass and the occasional harmonica. I love the way, on "Kind Hearted Woman," he goes for the falsetto in the same spots as Robert Johnson did on his version. Meanwhile, he's reinventing what slide guitar is going to sound like in the postwar era.
