Watch the Zapped 2 online guitar lesson by Joe Deloro from Blues Rock Road Trip 2

Phrase 2 is an eight bar Q&A phrase. The lead scale is the B mixolydian mode: B, C#, D#, E, F#, G#, A, B (1,2,3,4,5,6,b7,8) With D (b3) added in the second motive in measures three and four. Eddie Van Halen's solo style from his tune, I'm The One is the main reference for this phrase. Released by Van Halen on their self titled debut album, it was recorded in 1978, the same year as Eric Johnson's Zap. Although originally based on an A7, it's been developed here for B7, with less emphasis on open strings. Rapid modal hammer-on sequences and extended slides are also typical of Van Halen's style at that point and are featured here as well.

Besides I'm the One, the band also included a reworked high test version of John Brim's Chicago blues shuffle, Ice Cream Man on the same album. Taken together, both songs show the influences of blues and blues rock on the sound of this emerging powerhouse rock band from Los Angeles.

Finally, if you're not used to playing at tempos like this then don't be put off by the challenge. Just build up to it slowly with a metronome, beginning at half speed or whatever's comfortable. Once you can play both phrases, it will have been worth it to now be able to integrate these techniques into your own solo phrases.
