Phrase 2 is also a 4 bar Q&A, but this time the idea is connecting motives with similar rhythms, just short of making a T&V phrase. Normally Q&A’s are tricky when it comes to getting unity between motives. Using related rhythms is one way to solve the problem. Also, notice how the question draws from all the scale tones, while the answer sticks with chord tones primarily. The lead scale is E Pentatonic Minor: E,G,A,Bb,B,D,E (1,b3,4,5,6,b7,8) with C# (6) added for unity after the G figure in bar 3. Notice that Phrase 2 is more active than Phrase 1 and contrasts it well when connecting the two as an 8 bar period. Overall, it employs a melodic scale approach as opposed to a sustained chord tone sound as in Phrase 1.
