Phrase 3 is a four bar Q&A phrase with a shuffle feel. Both motives begin with pick-ups on beat four. Notice as the chord progression descends, the lead part continues to climb. This “contrary motion” helps to create good musical tension.
Shuggie's Boogie, by Shuggie Otis is the general reference point for Phrase 1. Recorded by Otis in 1969 at the age of 15, it’s a great example of solid phrasing on an up-tempo instrumental blues shuffle. Based in Southern California at the time, the overall sound here can logically be referred to as West Coast blues rock.
The chord progression is: B7,A7,E7,B7. The lead scale is E Blues: E,G,A,Bb,B,D,E (1,b3,4,b5,5,b7,8), and F# (6) and the C# (3) are also added in the second bar to support the A7.
