Phrase 1 is a four bar T&V phrase. Variations are pitch based and occur between motives at the ends of measures 1 and 3, and measures 2 and 4. The main attraction here though is figure variation as mentioned above. To locate these we’ll start with the main figure. It’s made up of the first four notes in measure 1: D, C, A, and C (1,b7,5,b7). From there it’s played four more times during the first motive in various rhythms and lengths. This makes a total of five figures.

Phrase 1's figure pattern is similar in the second motive, but extended to six figures. This is due to double-stop harmonizing in thirds applied at the end of the variation in measure 4. Beyond this, rhythmic variety is also introduced at the end of each motive (figure 5) with D chord tone targeting of F# (3) up to D (8). Be sure to have some fun playing the phrase first before getting into the analysis. The lead scale is A pentatonic minor: A,C,D,E,G,A (1,b3,4,5,b7,8). However, F (b6) and F# (6) are added in measure 4 as passing and chord tones for the D7 chord.
