Phrase 1 is a 4 bar Q&A phrase. Although both motives are different, notice how they both start strong and unified with a whole-step bend. The lead scale is B pentatonic minor: B,D,E,F#,A,B, (1,b3,4,5,b7,8). Note the chromatic passing note A# (7) in measures 2 and 4, and how it adds unity to each motive of the phrase.
The first motive's bend is referred to as “oblique” because of the stationary notes on the first two strings that harmonize with the bent third string. This is also a classic blues rock figure technique. Listen for it as the first lead figure in the Rolling Stone’s, Honky Tonk Women, and also at the beginning of Train Kept A Rollin’ by either The Johnny Burnette Trio, The Yardbirds, or Aerosmith.
