Watch the Down The Line 1 online guitar lesson by Joe Deloro from Blues Rock Road Trip 2

Phrase 1 is a four bar Q&A. The lead scale is G pentatonic major: G,A,B,D,E,G (1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 8) with an added Bb (b3) in the fourth bar.

Clarence began his professional career in the Los Angeles area as a bluegrass player with The Country Boys in the late 1950s. From there he went on to The Kentucky Colonels in the early 1960’s. Next, he joined The Byrds in 1968 and was very successful in translating his formidable acoustic bluegrass and electric guitar chops to country-rock and beyond.

Instead of country-rock though, the overall sound here is closer to the Grateful Dead’s, Casey Jones, with a Memphis/Stax feel. This hybrid approach is meant to illustrate the merit of mixing solid phrases from related styles, while changing things up, and encouraging you to experiment further.
